Combat Sports Gear for Beginners: A Substantive Guide to Smart Savings

Starting your journey in combat sports like BJJ, MMA, or boxing involves putting together your first set of gear. For a beginner, the challenge lies in understanding why two seemingly identical products can differ in price by hundreds of zlotys. At Ground Game, we prioritize transparency: not everyone needs to buy pro-level equipment right away, but everyone should understand where it is safe to save money and where cutting corners jeopardizes your health or training comfort.

Where can you save money?

As someone just starting out, you don't need products with the highest durability specs designed for daily, professional-level training loads—the time for those choices will come once you're truly hooked on combat sports. Here are the categories where you can opt for more budget-friendly models.

Synthetic leather gloves instead of genuine leather

Most beginners look for genuine leather gloves, associating them with the highest quality. However, for someone just starting out—who isn't yet sure if combat sports are for them and is training a maximum of 2–3 times a week—synthetic leather gear (such as the Essential boxing gloves) is the optimal choice. Modern synthetics offer high resistance to cracking and are easier to maintain (as they don't absorb moisture as deeply as genuine leather), all while being more affordable.

Budget-friendly BJJ Gi

In BJJ, the price of a kimono often depends on the material, patches, edition, and the popularity of a specific model. However, remember that you don't need a high-end gi for your start, take a look at basic kimonos instead. At Ground Game, we created the Spartan BJJ Gi, where we kept the number of embroideries and patches to a minimum (and based on feedback from our customers, we know that its clean, raw look can be a real advantage). This is a budget-friendly yet solid gi for beginners that will help you discover your preferences and get hooked on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It is more affordable than the bestselling, more decorative models that meet all IBJJF requirements.

Design and limited editions

Let's be honest, it feels better to train in gear that makes us look and feel good, and the pattern and color play a big part in that. But is it really worth investing in unique collections right from the start? This is exactly why we introduced the Essential rashguard line.

The Essential line consists of basic models available at a very competitive price. How do they differ from standard Ground Game rashguards? They are made from a lighter fabric and do not feature the silicone waistband that minimizes the risk of the rashguard riding up during training, but they still provide far greater comfort during a workout than a regular cotton T-shirt.

Where should you never cut corners? Investing in safety and hygiene

There are three key areas where a low price tag usually goes hand-in-hand with an increased risk of injury or serious health issues. That’s why we advise against skimping on these—after all, it makes no sense to save a bit now only to spend far more on medical treatment later, right?

Protective Gear

Many beginners view protective gear solely through the lens of a "mouthguard," but full protection covers all areas most susceptible to injury.

  • Dental Protection: Investing in a quality mouthguard is a fraction of the cost of a visit to the dentist. Cheap, "store-bought" models made of thin plastic do not provide real protection; they merely transfer the force of the impact to your teeth instead of dissipating it. Look for mouthguards made of EVA foam. A high-quality product, once molded, should stay firmly on your upper teeth without you having to clench your jaw, allowing you to breathe freely during exertion.

  • Shin and Foot Protection: In striking sports (MMA, Muay Thai), shin guards are essential to protect your bones from fractures. By choosing a model with a hard, shock-absorbing insert, you are protecting not only yourself but also your sparring partner.

  • Joint and Knee Support: If you are dealing with a past injury or are concerned about the state of your joints, you shouldn't skip out on extra support. Knee pads and stabilizers are crucial, especially in BJJ and wrestling, where it doesn't take much for an inexperienced opponent to accidentally cause an injury. A properly selected stabilizer not only braces the joint but also keeps it warm, which improves ligament flexibility and significantly minimizes the risk of re-injury.

  • Groin Protection: A groin guard (cup) is a fundamental piece of equipment in combat sports. Even an accidental hit during training without proper protection can result in serious health consequences.

A wise selection of protective gear is a sign of professionalism. It allows you to maintain training consistency and eliminates the risk of layoffs caused by injuries that could have easily been avoided.

Training Apparel

Training in a cotton T-shirt is the most common mistake beginners make. Sure, nothing terrible will happen if you show up to your first or second session in a regular tee, but keep in mind that cotton soaks up sweat, becomes heavy, and traps moisture against your skin. That is why you should invest in a rashguard right from the start. As we mentioned, the Essential models are an ideal choice. They act like a second skin, wicking sweat away and protecting against skin abrasions, which are often the gateway for infections.

Hand Wraps

Many people consider hand wraps an unnecessary accessory (even though they are relatively inexpensive), but that is a major mistake! Boxing bandages of the proper length (around 4m) and material are the foundation of safe striking. Wraps not only help stabilize your hands but also absorb sweat, making it much easier to maintain hygiene and extend the lifespan of your gloves. There is nothing worse than gear that reeks! :)

Save, but be smart about it

Understanding the specifications of training apparel and combat sports gear will allow you to manage your budget wisely. The following list is a ready-made recipe for a beginner's kit:

  • Gloves: Go for synthetic leather (savings without sacrificing protection) and remember to use hand wraps.

  • Kimono: Choose a more affordable model from a trusted, recommended brand, such as the Spartan BJJ Gi from Ground Game.

  • Rashguard: Invest in an Essential rashguard—even though it’s a budget version, it’s still far better than a regular cotton T-shirt.

  • Protective Gear: This is not the place to cut corners—the cost of buying them is a fraction of what you would pay for dental or physical therapy treatments.

A smart choice in equipment is one that allows you to train regularly and safely. You will appreciate Ground Game’s premium gear over time as your training intensity increases, but for a start, these principles will help you enter the world of combat sports with professional and safe equipment without overstretching your budget.
