Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is not just a sport, but also a form of self-defense and a great way to improve your overall physical and mental fitness. Want to start BJJ training? Here are a few tips to help you begin this exciting journey.

Basics are the foundation

It doesn't matter if you have previous experience with other sports or martial arts. BJJ has its own rules, techniques, and concepts that need to be mastered from scratch. Don't be afraid to start from the beginning—it is the foundation that determines the building of solid skills.

Choose a gym

Look for a proven place with experienced instructors who are committed to developing their students' skills. The easiest way is to check reviews online and on forums, e.g., in our Facebook group Ground Game Banda.

Invest in gear, but...

To start, all you need is a pair of shorts, a t-shirt, and flip-flops. Get proper attire and gear only after you catch the bug and decide to stick with the training. Then you will definitely need a BJJ gi (if you attend gi classes), a rashguard, shorts/leggings, and a mouthguard.

Train regularly

Progress in BJJ requires regular training. Try to train a few times a week to maintain continuity in your learning. Regular stretching, general conditioning exercises, and taking care of your fitness are important to avoid injuries and fully enjoy your workouts.

BJJ is a sport that requires patience. Don't expect to learn everything right away. Repeating techniques multiple times and training regularly are key. Also, remember that BJJ is about cooperation, not competing with your training partner. The goal is to learn and improve skills, not to win at all costs.

Develop outside the mat

Watching BJJ fights, reading books and articles on techniques, and talking with other practitioners can help expand your knowledge and understanding of the sport.

Remember that BJJ is a long-term journey during which you will gain skills, improve your physical and mental conditioning, and build relationships with other practitioners. Be open to learning, enjoy every training session, and remember that every progress, even the smallest one, is a huge success.
