When your child begins their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey, ensure their safety by investing in a solid BJJ gi. Find out what to pay attention to when choosing a model.
Weave
The weave in children's kimonos must be durable, lightweight, and comfortable. Pearlweave 350, for instance, meets these criteria, and BJJ gis sewn from it will perform well during both training sessions and competitions. Additionally, it is soft, minimizing the risk of skin irritation for your child.
Elastic Waistband Instead of a Drawstring
While you will find drawstring-waist pants in almost every adult BJJ gi, this solution is not the best choice for children. Pants with an elastic waistband are definitely ideal for young fighters, easily adapting to their body shape and causing fewer hassle when putting them on, especially for the youngest BJJ practitioners.
Reinforced Knees
When selecting a BJJ gi for a child, pay attention to how strategic areas—namely those prone to abrasions and tears—are stitched. This applies especially to the knee region down to the hem, so check if they are reinforced. This will save you from having to buy new pants frequently.
BJJ Gi Design
You know very well how much an outfit boosts confidence, right? It works exactly the same way for kids. BJJ kimonos are famous for colorful patches that make young warriors stand out. When looking for a gi, involve its future owner. Select kimonos that meet your standards, and then ask your child to pick the model they like most. That way, they will be even more eager to attend training and proudly wear their kimono.
Bonus: Free BJJ Belt
The belt ranking system in kids' BJJ is more extensive than in adults, mainly to maintain motivation for continued learning and training. Therefore, when buying a kimono for your child, check if you have the option to get a kimono + belt set with a free belt in any color. This is a handy option when your child is just starting BJJ (choose a white belt) or when you plan to buy a new kimono as a gift, e.g., for a promotion or competition (choose the higher or current belt).
Price
Buying the most expensive kimono at the beginning of a BJJ journey doesn't make sense, especially when you don't know whether the child will enjoy training (and if so, for how long ;) Most expensive doesn't mean best either, so don't treat price as the main purchasing criterion. The tips described above will be far more helpful when making your choice.
